Gana’s go-to bone broth
Ingredients:
-
6-8 beef bones (marrow bones preferred) or a chicken carcass (chicken feet optional for added collagen)
-
1 tbsp apple cider vinegar (ACV) - to help extract minerals
-
Water - enough to cover the bones
-
Optional add-ins:
-
-
Veggies: Carrots, onion, celery
-
-
-
Seasonings: Bay leaves, fresh thyme or parsley, salt, pepper
-
Instructions:
-
Prepare: Roast beef bones at 400°F for 30 - 40 minutes to enhance flavor (optional).
-
Start broth: Add bones, ACV and water to a stockpot. Let sit for 30 minutes.
-
Simmer gently: Simmer on low heat, skimming foam off as needed.
-
-
Beef bones: 6 -10 hours.
-
-
-
Chicken parts: 6 - 8 hours.
-
Tip: The longer the cooking time, the richer the broth will become.
-
Add optional veggies: Toss in vegetables and herbs in the last 2-3 hours.
-
Finish: Strain, cool, and store in the fridge or freezer.
Tip: Broth should be rich in color and may have a gelatinous texture once cooled, indicating high collagen content.
Tip: You can buy bones from the butcher at your local market or from the meat farmer at your neighborhood’s farmers market.
